Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

What is pelvic health physiotherapy?

Pelvic health physiotherapy focuses on assessing and restoring optimal function of the muscles, joints, and connective tissues of the pelvis and core. These structures play a key role in bladder, bowel, and sexual function, as well as core stability and movement. As such, pelvic floor physiotherapy is a well-established, effective first line of defence against incontinence and pelvic pain. It can help with issues such as leaking, pain, urgency, prolapse, and is a key part of prenatal care and postpartum recovery.

Pelvic health physiotherapists are specially trained to diagnose pelvic floor dysfunction using internal and external manual techniques. Sessions may include education, gentle internal or external assessment, tailored exercises, and strategies for daily life and movement.

Common conditions treated include:

  • Incontinence (bladder and/or bowel leakage)

  • Pelvic pain

  • Bladder urgency or bladder frequency (overactive bladder)

  • Pelvic organ prolapse

  • Dyspareunia (pain with intercourse)

  • Chronic constipation

  • Core weakness

  • Hip and low back pain

  • Tailbone pain (coccydynia)

  • Diastasis Recti (abdominal separation)

  • Prenatal care and postpartum recovery
